If you’re an architect, specifier, building designer or main contractor looking at a healthcare project…Axis can help, due to our award of a coveted place on the ProCure23 Recommended Suppliers List.

ProCure23 is the fourth generation of NHS England’s route to market for the provision of design and construction services to NHS capital projects. Axis was on the ProCure22 list, which this now supersedes, so we’re delighted to be able to continue contributing to new build, refurbishment & maintenance projects within NHS properties, across the UK.

OUR CREDENTIALS FOR PROCURE23
Axis is the manufacturer of the innovative and award-winning Flo-Motion® manual sliding door system, developed specifically for the healthcare sector. We’re also the exclusive UK partner for Doorson and Manusa doors.

Our accreditations include Constructionline Gold, CHAS, ADSA, Alcumus and IIP, and we’re active members and contributors to the Architects for Health network.

As well as being manufacturers, suppliers and installers of manual and automatic doors, Axis also has a nationwide network of service and maintenance engineers, which we run from our central UK base.

FLO-MOTION® IN HEALTHCARE
The Flo-Motion® door system was first conceived, designed and developed in-house, for the new, state-of-the-art, Alder Hey Children’s Hospital in Liverpool, which opened in 2015.

Flo-Motion® manual sliding doors feature recirculating ball guides on a special low resistance linear track system with damper mechanism at the fully opened and closed positions. The high number of balls used ensure continuous contact with bearing surfaces, as well as the contained roller, which increases the slide load rate capability and decreases the movement force for easy and safe operation with minimal effort, using fingertip control. The Flo-Motion® door has been tested to over one million cycles (test stopped at 1.36 million cycles = 3.26million metres).

Other benefits of this range of telescopic, single and double door sets, include space-saving with the slim-line stiles, and a wealth of options for the designer, like full-width, fully glazed panels with interstitial blinds, and the wide scope of finishes, fixings and handles. Once installed, the doors are digitally force tested, and a certificate is issued showing the mean average opening and closing force with test data in graph format.

SUPPORTING ARCHITECTS & BUILDING DESIGNERS
Further enhancing the designer’s work, Axis offers a suite of online tools and resources through its website, including clear opening calculators, specifications, CAD drawings, and BIM models.

Support is also available from the technical and service team, who are always on hand for more information, to share their knowledge and expertise, and to answer questions.

Opportunities to build, develop and maintain supplier relationships
The way we go about this important aspect of our business is by spending time with our suppliers and potential suppliers. The more time we spend together, the better we understand each other and what we each require and can give to the relationship.

BAU, Munich, 13-17 January 2025
A perfect opportunity to build, develop and maintain supplier relationships presented itself in January, when our MD, Rob Brunero visited BAU in Munich, the World's Leading Trade Fair for Architecture, Materials and Systems, which takes place every two years.

Here’s Rob’s account of his 3-day visit to BAU:
I am always excited for trips like this!

BAU is an event where everyone involved in the international community for the planning, designing and construction of all types of buildings comes together, to share and show new ideas and products, make new contacts and catch up with existing ones.

And that’s exactly why I was there too! However, with 18 exhibition halls, 2,600 exhibitors and 190,000 visitors, it’s safe to say; I didn’t see everything and everyone I would have liked to during my 3-day visit.

While I met some great new contacts, here are some of my highlights, from catching up with existing suppliers and seeing their innovations for 2025:

DOORSON – in addition to the very popular 300 series of automatic doors, which you can peruse here – Doorson 300 Automatic Sliding Door range - Doorson used the exhibition to launch their new 330 energy efficient range, which was exceptionally well received!

As per the 300 range, there will be three formats, single slide, bi-parting and telescopic - all of which will be available in the UK later this year, through us at Axis. For a little teaser, check this out – Doorson 330 Energy Efficient Automatic Sliding Door

The models include thermally broken frames that will accept triple glazing (thermal conductivity of up to 1.0 W/m²k) and RC3 (according to EN 1627) security rated systems - all elegantly designed with clean lines, a feature Doorson is renowned for.

In addition, the award winning 500EFS fire rated automatic door with breakout facility was also on display. For more details and videos, click here – Doorson 500 EFS Fire Escape Automatic Sliding Door

Patrik and Aleksander along with their colleagues were very busy on their stand, so I was delighted they were able to afford me time over the three days for some very worthwhile discussions.

FACE – exhibiting their very attractive range of products with the usual panache and design that Italian manufacturers are well known for, helped make my time on their stand very enjoyable.

We have successfully installed their SW80 swing door operators on quite a few projects now. Here’s a link – FACE SW80

Excitingly, FACE are launching a 2nd generation of products and their new SW70 swing door operator was on display and at only 70mm high is a very slim unit that offers a smooth and quiet operation. Another product to look forward to later in the year! Here’s the tutorial video for the SW70S that FACE released at BAU – FACE SW70

HOTRON – we have enjoyed a very longstanding relationship with David and his team, who always provide a warm welcome and are very attentive – no wonder their stand was a networking hotspot, where I was able to catch up with several other contacts too!

Hotron’s stand was very well-designed with many of their excellent, tried and tested products on show – here’s their latest product video for the SSS 5 swing door safety sensor – Hotron SSS5

BEA – here was another company we have worked with for a long time, who were exhibiting a superb range of activation and safety sensors, taking laser technology into the future. I was happy to receive a demonstration on the Orascan sensor for automatic sliding doors, described as the “

Recently Axis Entrances contributed £2,637 to the Alder Hey Children's Charity, making the total donation value from Axis a whopping £15,055.45, since the new hospital opened.

"On behalf of everyone at Alder Hey Children’s Charity, I would like to say a big thank you for your most recent gift of £2,637. We treat over 900 children and young people every day at Alder Hey Children’s Hospital and when we all come together the difference we can make is astonishing... Axis Entrances are part of the very fabric of Alder Hey as we know it today."

We are always pleased to read such kind words. Axis were proud to be able to produce large glazed manual sliding doors for the patient’s rooms at Alder Hey. Despite the size and weight of each door, the low friction track system means that they can be easily opened and closed.

Every Flo-Motion® manual sliding door installed by Axis Entrance Systems is force tested and a certificate issued on completion. To find out more about our products, visit our website https://axisentrances.com/ or email sales@axisentrances.com and we will be pleased to discuss your requirements and our services in further detail.

Tim states” It will be a huge honour to chair the association. We need to continue to be recognised as the industry experts and all ADSA members have a huge part to play. Flo-Motion® doors have won four prestigious awards. Firstly, Laing O'Rourke's 2015 Construction North Award for Innovation, followed by the IHEEM 2015 Product Innovation Award. This was followed by the Building Better Healthcare Best Internal Building Product 2015 and in 2016, the European Healthcare Design Award for Innovation for Quality Improvement.

Axis also supplies and installs Manusa Automatic Hermetic Doors to fulfill every requirement. Sliding, swing, lead-lined or glass, all our hermetic doors are functional, aesthetic and hygienic. In order to guarantee correct hermetic sealing, the sliding leaf drops down 15mm towards the floor and fits 10mm towards the frame so as seal the perimeter of the gap. On the swing doors the leaf is sealed at the side and top to guarantee a perfect hermetic seal. It is also equipped with a mechanism that slides along the floor to ensure the door is sealed at the bottom too.

Stratford Garden Centre have improved customer flow and access by building a new exit area to accommodate the tills away from the hustle and bustle of the entrance. This meant they needed new doors and they naturally turned to their regular supplier, Axis Automatic Entrance Systems, who had previously installed Stanley Automatic Doors throughout the centre.

The new Stanley Dura-Glide SLD features bi-parting automatic doors sliding over glazed screens with infra red sensors linked to the Stanley MC521 Pro Controller and Eco Pro dynamic user interface. This new generation controller is completely re-engineered for the Stanley Duraglide SLD & SLH models and includes a
“soft-start” “soft-stop” motor driving circuit for smooth normal opening and recycling.

The door engineer can set door functions very easily, including door and motor type, handing, speed, hold-open delay, troubleshooting and much more via a Windows mobile handset although the control panel can also be set manually. The system will collect and store performance data including an operating cycle counter and event and error reporting while displaying the current operating state.

The display unit can be discretely mounted on either the jamb or a nearby wall and provides an electronic alternative to manual switches. All basic door functions of rotary and toggle switches, up to six positions, can be controlled as well as setting programmed schedules for enhanced operating mode changes based on the day of the week, time of day, etc.

The Dura-Glide 2000 Series is the industry standard for smooth, reliable operation in every application from high-traffic retail locations, like garden centres, to upscale professional and institutional settings. Door packages are manufactured to suit individual requirements and installed by ADSA Authorised Technicians (Automatic Door Suppliers' Association) as per the guidelines of EN16005 (formerly BS7036:1996 - Code of Practice for safety at powered doors for pedestrian use).

Back in 2004, Paul Southern and his niece and her husband, Helen and Gwyn Lloyd bought an old bedding plant nursery 3 miles south of Stratford upon Avon and re-opened as Stratford Garden Centre in 2006. Over the succeeding years this family business has grown to its current 7 acres and 24,000 square feet of indoor retail space with plans to increase that by a further 9,000 square feet.

They are very pleased with the new layout keeping both the old entrance and the new exit free flowing and less cluttered and encouraging customers to move further around the store and experience more of what they have to offer. Helen Lloyd said “ Once again Axis have given us an excellent product backed up by their knowledgeable and flexible service to help us create the solution we had planned.”

Five Stanley Dura-Care 7500 telescopic sliding doors have been installed by Axis Automatic Entrance Systems at the Spire Hartswood Private Hospital in Brentwood Essex. Halliday Meecham Architects were looking to replace timber doors on the 5 patient “pods” used in the recovery area for day-case procedures. The previous doors restricted access for moving beds in and out of the rooms and also created a very closed and detached environment. While researching alternatives they found the Stanley Dura-Care door range featured on the Axis Automatic Entrance Systems website. The fully glazed doors create a much brighter and attractive ambience in the recovery rooms and the breakout facility makes moving beds around much easier. Four of the doors consist of one fixed leaf 765mm wide and two sliding leaves that combine to give a clear opening of 1450mm in a full width of 2215mm. The fifth door is slightly smaller but of similar proportions.

The Stanley Dura-Care 7500 is a manual sliding door system designed to meet the specific needs of hospital intensive and cardiac care units (ICU/CCU). This telescopic door is available in 3 or 6 panel packages and those installed at Spire Hartswood Hospital feature emergency breakout on the leading sliding leaf, positive latching and are a trackless design to provide completely unimpeded access. The 6.4mm laminated glass panels have made the whole area much brighter and lighter and are proving very popular with patients and staff alike compared to the previous unglazed doors. Frosted film has been applied to parts of the glass to give privacy without reducing the overall brightness.

Project Manager Kevin Hill of M&O Building Contractors was also impressed with the service provided by Axis, particularly the way problems were overcome and the final completion date strictly adhered to.
Spire Hartswood Private Hospital, Brentwood, Essex is part of the Spire Healthcare hospital network that offers a comprehensive range of private hospital services.
The Stanley Dura-Care range of ICU/CCU doors offers a selection of sliding, swing, folding and bi-folding door configurations. They have all been designed to maximise clear space openings and have many features ideal for healthcare environments including smoke and draft controls, positive/negative pressure environments and anti-microbial protection. Electronic privacy glass can be fitted that instantly turns from clear to opaque with the flick of a switch for patient privacy.

It was 85 years ago this year, in 1931, that the world’s first automatic door was patented, sold and installed. The door was invented by Horace H. Raymond and Sheldon S. Roby for the Stanley Works and was installed at Wilcox's Pier Restaurant in West Haven, Connecticut in 1931. The entire system (operator, beams and doors) plus installation was sold for $100. Due to the product's success, an automatic door division spun off of the Stanley Works and is now called Stanley Access Technologies.

The door was originally designed for use between the kitchen and the dining room at Wilcox’s Pier Restaurant and consisted of a pneumatically powered swing door operator controlled by a light beam “magic eye”

The patent, filed by the inventors in November 1931, claimed:
Our invention relates to apparatus for operating doors, and has special reference to apparatus of this character that is controllable by light sensitive means.

One of the objects of our invention is to provide an apparatus for operating doors which is so constructed that as a person approaches the door, the door is opened automatically and remains open until the person has passed therethrough, whereupon the door automatically closes.

Another of the objects of our invention is to provide an apparatus of the character indicated which is simple in construction, and reliable and efficient in operation.

The opening of the doors is controlled by a photo-electric cell mounted in posts arranged in front of the doors so that a person approaching passes between them. Then the variation in the current from the photo-electric cell acts through an amplifier and relay system to close the circuit connection with an electro-magnet. When the doors have opened a predetermined distance to allow the person to pass through the door-way, the operating mechanism acts automatically to close the doors and to maintain them closed until another person crosses the lightbeam. The operating mechanism is mounted on the back or kitchen side of the door casing so that it is out of sight from the dining-room.

It is apparent from day one of the history of automatic doors that key features were simplicity, reliability and efficiency as well as the overall aesthetics. These features have been guiding principles of the last 85 years and are as important in Stanley products today as in 1931.

Axis Automatic Entrance Systems embrace the same values and are the sole UK distributors of Stanley automatic door equipment.
