What Is LOLER?
LOLER stands for the Lifting Operations and Lifting Equipment Regulations 1998. These UK regulations apply to anyone who owns, controls or uses lifting equipment at work, including employers, landlords, facilities managers, and duty holders.
Under LOLER, all lifting equipment must be thoroughly examined by a competent person at suitable intervals. If defects are found that could cause danger, the equipment must be taken out of use immediately until the defects are rectified.
What Is PUWER?
PUWER stands for the Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations 1998. These UK regulations apply to most work equipment used by employees at work, covering everything from simple hand tools to complex machinery and installations.
Under PUWER, employers and duty holders must ensure that work equipment is suitable for its intended use, safe to operate, properly maintained, and inspected by a competent person where necessary. The regulations place clear responsibilities on those who provide, control, or manage work equipment.
PSSR Inspections – Pressure Systems
PSSR stands for the Pressure Systems Safety Regulations 2000. These regulations apply where stored energy in a pressure system could cause injury if released unexpectedly. This includes systems containing compressed air, steam, and certain refrigeration or air-conditioning systems.
Under PSSR, duty holders must ensure that pressure systems are properly designed, maintained, and examined. A key requirement is having a written scheme of examination prepared or certified by a competent person, and ensuring examinations are carried out by a competent person at the intervals specified in the scheme.
Machinery Safety Risk Assessment
PUWER — the Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations — requires users of work equipment to carry out regular, documented risk assessments. Those assessments must address each of the regulations under PUWER and demonstrate that the equipment is suitable for its intended task and can be used without putting people at risk.
Our engineers carry out thorough assessments focusing on the safety-critical components and features that affect whether equipment can be operated safely. We review the design and installation of the equipment and flag any issues that compromise compliance — for example a non-compliant safety-related control circuit, inadequate guarding, or a machine that requires UKCA / CE marking.
If you are an employer or self-employed person and you provide equipment for use at work, or if you have control of the use of equipment, PUWER will generally apply to you
